Tales from a Country Village – March 2025
As Spring shakes off the cold and damp mantle of Winter all of a sudden there is colour appearing in the garden and and along the various footpaths around the village.
Starting with the snowdrops we have now moved quickly onto the wild cherry blossom, daffodils and primulas. However, there are still those who are warning of a Beast from the East blowing in over the next few months!! But that’s what being out in nature is all about.
Another nice thing about this time of year is that you can now stop and chat with other dog walkers and other people you meet out and about. Rather than just raising a gloved hand as you pass head down trudging through the mist, rain and mud.
The allotments and fields are now being turned over by fork, Rotavator, or in the case of one local farmer an autonomous tractor.
This object, looking a lot like a small tank, appeared in one of the central fields in the village and started to move up and down with a plough in tow. This started at about five in the evening and went on through most of the night. A very impressive looking bit of kit, which was rumoured to be worth close to the one million pounds mark! Anyway for an autonomous vehicle there were an awful lot of people on hand. Camera and sound crews, drone operators, people to get in on and off trailers and someone sitting in a van ready to take remote control if anything went wrong.
As one celebrated local said “it’s OK replacing the experienced driver in the cab with a computer to drive up and down the field, but that is not the whole job of ploughing.”
So maybe that is the message to go forward with communication in what every form is good for everyone.
